Green Clean: DIY Carpet Stain Removal

Carpet Stain-oops

Stains, spills, and spit-ups. They are all bound to happen at some point. Why not make your own simple, effective and GREEN carpet stain fighter? Many products you may have under your sink contain toxic chemicals and pollutants you would never dream of bringing into your home. Ingredients such as Naphthalene, Formaldehyde, and Perchloroethylene are just some of the hazardous components in many common carpet cleaners. Ingredients such as these have been known to reduce blood cell count, cause dizziness and fatigue and are carcinogenic. Yuck!

Stains caused by wine, soda, ice-cream, food dyes, jelly, mud, washable ink, chocolate, coffee, blood and much more can all be erased with these simple DIY cleaning solutions. The trick is to never scrub too aggressively. Simply blot the area working from the outside of the stain inward. Aggressive scrubbing can ruin the carpet fibers and potentially cause the stain to work itself deeper into the carpet padding.

The following recipes work wonders on almost all carpet types. As with any cleaning solution, try a small amount in a hidden or covered area first to ensure your specific carpet type can handle it, then erase those stubborn stains away!
